In turkey mode here

We are in "Go Turkey!" mode here at Chez Crazy. I actually bought 2 turkeys, as the first one, weighing in at 19.5 lbs, seemed too small. (We'll eat that one at Christmas.) I have a big freezer to keep the other one in, as there is no such thing as Too Much Turkey here.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. We usually don't go anywhere, and we have a nice meal with friends. This year I'm cooking the bigger turkey, rice and giblet gravy (we don't do mashed potatoes since South Carolinians Make Rice), yummy Southern cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole, green beans, steamed broccoli with a cream sauce, maybe a dilled carrot dish, cranberry jelly, pumpkin bread, and rolls. We'll have a few guests, mostly folks with no place to go, who will join us to eat on my nice china and silver. DH does his part by cleaning up afterwards. I don't make much in the way of desert because we're stuffed by the end of the meal. But maybe I'll get a nice apple pie....

The feast in a prior year

The Stooges are salivating already at the thought of eating turkey, dressing, and gravy. And I can say in all honesty: my dressing and gravy is now better than Mom's is. And she's a good cook. But she's not cooking regularly for teeming hordes anymore, so she's out of practice.

I like Thanksgiving because, outside of cooking the meal, there's not much else you have to do. No presents to buy, no tree to decorate. Nothing but a nice meal and some visiting, then eating leftovers and lying around afterwards. I won't go shopping on Friday either. It's just a pleasant, relaxing time. And I'm grateful to have a nice family and friends who love me.

I know I need to sew in that green thread

I'm making these little trees for my Sunday School class to use as ornaments. I think they're cute, don't you? The ladies in my class will love them.

What are you doing for Thanksgiving?

  1. DOTR and I were watching the blasts of Black Friday ads last night and I was trying to remember if I've ever gone shopping on the day after Thanksgiving. I don't think so. AND I've been to the mall several times in the past couple of weeks and didn't see a thing I wanted then, so what makes the day after Thanksgiving so magical?

Enjoy your day.....we're midwesterners, so potatoes are essential. I'd have mutiny if I tried to serve rice! ha!

  5. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday too! Family & food without any gift pressure.

I actually know some people who get to the mall at 4:30 AM so that they can do all their Christmas shopping in one day. No thank you! I much prefer to shop all year long, picking up things as I see them. My only plans for Black Friday are to eat leftovers and watch a couple of good movies on DVD.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

  6. We'll go over to the kids' for Thanksgiving turkey. DD will only let me make the sweet potatoes (she says she doesn't know how) and she will fix everything else. DSIL has to work (he's in retail) so we'll have to take him a plate to eat at work. I have to work on Friday, but we can wear jeans and team colors that day, and it won't be that busy for us (but look out Monday!).

  7. Go Turkey! :-)

Silly Hat Central, not being a sporty sort of household, roots hard for Turkey and the (mythical?) tryptophan drowse that follows the feast.

The ladies in your Sunday school class are sure to love the little trees! I know because they are so bee-yoo-ti-ful!

  8. The Best Husband demanded beef, so no turkey it is, which is fine with Older Son and Younger Son, too. I can not mind, as it makes my day easier. Except for the family recipe: noodles, heavy cream, eggs, three different cheeses (usually Emmenthaler, Gruyere, and Gouda), baked until firm. So good.
Glad you are feeling (and hopefully seeing) better. Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  10. I was 45 minutes from home at my son's but I was home and in bed by 10:30 that night. I think all of my kids or their spouses went to the stores THAT NIGHT though as Black Friday started way way early this year - like before midnight. And I heard the parking lots were packed full. Not my thing - never has been. But for those who enjoy it, it is fun, I hear. :-)
